EXPERIMENT RESIDENCIES

residency programs for choreographers and scientists / researchers. The aim was to explore the creative collaboration between artistic practice & scientific research, by encouraging the synthesis of a distinctive blend of research interests and people. These partnerships were based on exchange, dialogue, inspiration and co-creation, while being developed on the fringes of the respective disciplines.

EXPERIMENT A
MARIA KAROGLOU & KYRIAKI NASIOULA

2022

Through the process of an open call, Kyriaki Nasioula (choreographer, dancer, architect) & Maria Karoglou (Chemical Engineer, National Technical University of Athens) were selected to collaborate for the period from September 15th until November 15th 2022. The participants had no prior working relationship and were chosen by a panel of experts on a point based system. With their personal methodologies and interests as the point of departure they saught a common ground so as to transform their joint research into a choreographic outcome and explore the birth of a new collaborative relationship. The residency process was followed by Christiana Kazakou, transdisciplinary researcher, curator and program engagement specialist for the international organization Leonardo/ISAST. Kazakou acted as a mentor and connecting link between disciplines.

Residency selection panel: Flux Laboratory Athens founder and director Cynthia Odier, Flux Laboratory Athens team Athina Delyannis & Christina Dilari, Christiana Kazakou (transdicilinary researcher, curator, Leonardo ISAST), Thanassis Akylas (Astrophysicist, National Observatory of Athens), Chloe Aligianni (programme curator).

Outcomes of this collaboration were:

- An open sharing of 'SIN [US]' the choreographic work in progress born from the collaboration and a post show discussion with all team members. (M54 space)

- A Field Trip event dedicated to the project: an evening of reflection on creative and collaborative practices with an open discussion. An opportunity to share the intriguing stories behind the project and dive into the special moments of its research and formation process. The audience is invited to sit around a table for a casual conversation with the project’s contributors. The format of Field Trip usually consists of three key elements: a round table discussion, the presentation of audio-visual or other research material, as well as the parallel audio recording of the event that forms part of Flux Laboratory’s artistic archive.

- The continuation of the project from the two collaborators with support from the Ministry of Culture and its development into the full scale dance production '4 + ENA' presented at the Municipal Theatre of Pireus in 2024.

EXPERIMENT B
ANGELOS PAPADOPOULOS, KONSTANTINOS BAKOGIANNIS, PAGONA BOULBASAKOU

2023 - 2024

In its second edition – 'Experiment B' - an open call invited existing collaborative duos or groups that involve at least one choreographer and one scientist to apply with an idea or project that they wished to collaborate on. The residents of "Experiment B", Angelos Papadopoulos (choreographer), Konstantinos Bakogiannis (sound and music computing post-doc researcher, department of Music Studies, University of Athens) and Pagona Boulmpasakou (performer) researched sound and spatial design, interactive systems and immersive environments through their joint toolkit. Since the middle of October 2023, they took over the 4th floor of Paleologou Benizelou which became their workspace for the following three months. They shared the research developed through this process with students at the Department of Performing and Digital Arts (University of Peloponnese) and Moragemou Professional Dance School. The journey of the group was followed by videographer Xenia Tsilochristou, who captured the collaborative process and created a short documentary film.

Residency selection panel: Kyriaki Nasioula (choreographer, Experiment A artist), Maria Karoglou (chemical engineer, NTUA, Experiment A scientist), Christiana Kazakou (transdisciplinary curator & producer, Experiment A mentor), Andreas Kazantzidis (Professor, Department of Physics, University of Patras), Olga Ktenidou (Seismologist, National Observatory of Athens), Niki Xenou (arts & culture manager), Georgia Tegou (choreographer).

Outcomes of this collaboration were:

- An open sharing of the choreographic outcomes at Paleologou Benizelou building.

- A workshop structure for media and dance students that the collaborators piloted through this process.

- The production of a documentary film by Xenia Tsilochristou as a separate artistic outcome with a life of its own. Past screenings: Mill of Performing Arts (2024), Athens Video Dance Project (2024).
